Fumes, traffic and smiley faced locals, not too sure if they are just naturally happy or just happy to rip us off. Food? mmmmmmmm absolutely fab, random travellers already travelled out, we are beginning to feel natural again. Nice traveller from Uruguay tried to help with the bikes and chatted about anything and nothing. We acquired overnight train tickets for Nong Khai, and strolled onto a ferry across the Chao Phraya River to the much quieter west part of town. A few temples later, we collapsed for a splashette and headed for the train. I thought that the station would be great escape from the madness and pollution. Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Every carriage had a separate generator running the aircon - what an ecological disaster!!! No choice, we had to suffer it. The train journey reminded me of India and a class system. We had a lovely air-conditioned carriage with staff making beds (whenever you wanted). Dinner, breakfast and drinks could be ordered and delivered as you wished – a service long time forgotten in Europe, or perhaps it was never like it.
