Woke up early but didn’t get on the road until about 9.30. Teresa had a look at the 11th century Khmer temple nearby and I have rested with the nature by the lake. Cycling was arduous due to the temperature so it necessitated lots of refreshment stops to replace the gallons being sweated out. We chose very local street restaurant for a coffee but ended up having a full on, fantastic meal instead and got a cooking lesson from the old lady chef as well. Result!
Back on the road and we met two Dutch and a French cyclist. They all had just accidently met in the capital and decided to cycle together. Good for them. Had a few energy drinks and few waters together. Exchanged ideas and headed of again. Then at a big intersection, the flagging Teresa spotted an airconed café with free WiFi. Couldn`t miss that opportunity and it was worth it. We met two young local gents researching business plans on the said free WiFi. They spoke English and we talked politics with them. They told us some alarming things about the current government - we exchanged the info for a copy of the film “Zeitgeist” – a view of dirty politics worldwide! A few more kms and we stopped for a drink as the sun was beginning to set. Suddenly somebody started whacking the ground with a big stick. Lots of running ensued as they tried to kill a snake - it was pretty scary not knowing what was happening while locals where chasing the creature. Finally an old woman walked off with the trophy of a still moving snake wrapped in a small plastic bad – we presume supper?!
Last 20km we cycled in a total darkness, but reasonably easy considering the low traffic and much nicer temperature. Collapsed in a café opposite a guest house for a few drink and full explanation to the owners what we are doing on the bikes. No English spoken of course.
Cycled 87 km
